Glaciers in Gilgit Baltistan

 There are 5100 glaciers and 119 lakes in the world's most famous mountain range, the Himalayas, Karakorum, and Hindukush. Let's visit some of them.

Biafo Glacier:

The Biafo Glacier in the Karakoram Mountains of Gilgit Baltistan meets the 49 km long Hispar Glacier at an altitude of 5128 m (16824 ft) at a snow lake to create the world's largest glacier system outside the Polar region. It was observed that the ice-free areas and the ice-covered areas in the year 1992 were 20.9km square and 92.8km square, respectively. Due to climate change, in the year 2000, the ice-covered area was reduced to 42 km square, subsequently increasing the ice-covered area to 86.2 km square.

which is 20.5km long and spread over 115 square km. The visible peak at the far end is Passu Peak, which is 7478 m (24534 ft) high. Passu Village is situated on the north side of the Passu Glacier. The Passu Glacier is linked with Batura and other glaciers of the mountain range.

Batura Glacier

Batura Glacier is 57 km long and is one of the largest and longest glaciers outside the polar region. It lies in the Batura valley of Passu in the Gojal (75,00 m above sea level) region of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. It was observed that the ice-free areas and the ice-covered areas in the year 1992 were 25km square and 98km square, respectively. Due to climate change, the ice-covered area has been reduced to 42 km square, thereby increasing the ice-covered area to 81km square.

Batura Glacier

Barsawat Glacier Ishkoman Ghizer Gilgit Baltistan.

Due to climate change, the Barsawat Glacier burst and flooded the Barsawat River. As a result, an artificial lake formed in the Kurumber River and badly damaged the residential area around 5km away from the Bilhanz area of Tehsil Ishkoman.

The blockade has cut off more than 200 households, chattels, fields, 34 houses, and properties damaged in the lower part of the Ishkoman Valley.
