Shandur Polo Festival

Polo was first played in Persia (Iran), with dates ranging from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. After 821 A.D., polo became an international sport in Japan, with Chinese ambassadors competing against an emperor's team.

Shandur Polo Ground

Shandur Polo Festival:  

The Annual Shandur Polo Festival is set to be held from July 7th to the 9th of every year at Shandur Pass, the highest polo ground in the world at 3700 meters, which is located between the borders of Ghizer Gilgit Baltistan and the District of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A total of six teams will participate in the Shandur Polo Festival 2019. Three teams from Chitral and Gilgit respectively, and the final match will be played between the two best teams from either site. Different cultural programs, including a musical night, traditional dance, food stalls, paragliding, and national songs, are part of the festival.


World's highest Polo Ground

Shandur is situated at an altitude of 12,500 ft. and 38,00 meters above sea level. There are two routes to reach Shandur from Gilgit (the capital of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan). The distance from Gilgit to Shandur is 232 Km and the distance from Chitral to Shandur is 147 Km. Shandur Polo ground is naturally designed, and there are small hills on either side, and the Lake of Shandur view makes it more beautiful.

The distance from Gilgit to Shandur is 232 km and it takes about 6 hours while going by Rood. The road is much better for traveling than in other areas of the region. There are many tourist attractions on the way to Shandur from Gilgit, such asOne of the most beautiful places in Pakistan is the Phandar Valley, and the valley is known as the Switzer Land of Pakistan. The most beautiful place in Phander is located in the District of Ghizer. The natural atmosphere is full of nature and the river Pander is famous for its trout fish.

Gahkuch Valley:

The Junction of the Ishkoman and Yasin Rivers. Gahkuch is the headquarters of District Ghizer and the junction of Ishkoman and Gupis, Yasin River.
